Ally to Retired Racehorses: Kathleen Gerenger

When a racehorse’s career is deemed over, it is sometimes sent to slaughter, for no other reason than that it can no longer race as it did when it was young. Kathleen Gerenger loves horses, and stands up to this injustice as a true friend to animals and to retired racehorses in particular. Kathleen Gerenger sees these animals not as things that have outgrown their usefulness, but as creatures that deserve to be protected. Kathleen Gerenger works tirelessly to ensure that all retired racehorses get the chance to live out the rest of their lives once they leave the track.

With this goal in mind, Kathleen Gerenger began volunteering for the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation of New York, launching a lifelong passion to improve the lives of these beautiful animals. While some people might be content just to do this work, Kathleen Gerenger realized that advocating for these animals was not enough. Eventually, Kathleen Gerenger took it upon herself to rescue a racehorse that was slated to be killed. By adopting Gamble the retired racehorse, Kathleen Gerenger saved his life, and gained a lifelong companion. Gamble and Kathleen Gerenger are a winning team. Kathleen Gerenger and Gamble even celebrated a victory together at the Geneseo Horse Trials, where they won in their training level.

Their victory showed that retired racehorses’ lives are far from over when their racing careers end, and Kathleen Gerenger’s work to rescue retired racehorses is very important and can really pay off. Kathleen Gerenger is proud to spend much of her time protecting horses like Gamble. And through competing with Gamble, Kathleen Gerenger shows that for a racehorse that gets a second chance, retirement can be the beginning, not the end, of a new and exciting life, for horses and their adoptive owners alike. Kathleen Gerenger works every day to help horses like Gamble find loving homes.
